“I love you, babe. Have a great first day at work,” I said to Melanie before she headed out of the front door.

“Thanks. I can’t believe I’m going back to work.”

I hugged her and kissed her on the lips. She didn’t get a job working back at Time is Money, but she did manage to get an Executive Assistant position for a huge company downtown. She seemed pretty excited about it.

“Is your mom on her way?” I asked, looking at the clock on the wall of the hallway. “I don’t want to be late for work.”

“She should be pulling up any minute. I would wait around, but traffic is a bitch and I need to be on time for my first day.”

“No problem, baby. I’m just glad the boys are still sleeping. I don’t know what to make them for breakfast.”

“Yeah. Mama will make them breakfast and get them dressed, so don’t worry about anything. Okay?” She kissed me again.

“Bye. Call me on your first break.”

“K.”

I watched her walk down the driveway and get into her car. Before she could pull out, her mama was pulling up. I inhaled and exhaled. I hoped this lady wouldn’t start with me today. It was too early. Melanie waved at her mother and Emma made her way up to the front door.

“Good morning, Emma,” I said warmly.

“Morning. The babies up yet?”

“Nope, not yet. I’m glad you’re here so I can shower and get dressed for work.”

I let her in and closed the door behind her.

She looked at her watch. “You runnin’ a lil’ late ain’t cha?”

“Just a lil’ bit. I can still make it on time if I rush.”

She hummed a little to herself, rolled her eyes, and hung her purse of the coat rack. I didn’t have time to pay attention to her attitude. I had to get going. I just hoped she wouldn’t be a problem. I would hate to have to fire Melanie’s mama.
